MEG 01 exam is considered to be most tough paper for students pursuing Master of Arts English from IGNOU. Lengthiness of course and uncertainty of paper style makes it more difficult for students to clear this compulsory subject, but don't worry, one can get good marks by following below points
IGNOU follows two paper style for MEG 01, We may classified it by Paper Style A and B
a) Paper Style A )
This is somehow easy paper style
20 Marks Stanza Question (where stanza are given and we are asked to give comment on particular stanza)
80 Marks (Generally 04 question of 20 marks ) where we are provided with name of poetry / poem and we are asked to write about them.
This paper style is easy because, in stanza type question ,IGNOU does not provide name of poet / poem, so it becomes very hard for student to recognize stanza. If we can recognize name of poet and poetry of stanza we can write something. But in absence of these it is very difficult to identity stanza. But If we can perform well in rest of question of 80 marks, we can take this 20 marks questions for granted.
IGNOU has this type of question paper in following years
June 2018
December 2017

June 2012.
b) Paper Style B
This paper style consist of 100 Marks Stanza type question (Generally 10 question of 10 marks ) where we are not left with any option. Most of student fails to compile with minimum passing marks in this type of question paper.
IGNOU has preferred this type of question paper in following years

Now How to prepare ?
Keeping in view to above trend we have to prepare considering both style of paper. It is very hard to judge which type of question paper supposed to be asked.
You will be quite afraid seeing length of course. Even if you are going to read all block in sequence i.e. starting from first block, it may possible that you leave this subject by reading just few pages of first block, (this specially applies to non literary background students and somehow to literary background student as well) because this blocks contains Canterbury Tales by Chaucer. This is very wonderful and funny poem but this is written in 12 Century in Old English. we in general are not much familiar with language and historical background in which this poetry is written.
Therefore, I suggest to skip this block for latter on,
Though if you want to read this block, first have some idea about Chaucer, Canterbury Tales from internet or any youtube videos. Once you complete this task read this combination of simplified and old English provided by Harvard University and make notes and try to remember stanza in general.
The Nun's Priest's Tale -- an interlinear translation
*We must prepare notes on each poetry for better preparation and revision and our note must contain following points
1. One of wonderful quote of that poet.
2. Introduction of Poet (i.e. details about his life/death / love / affairs / achievement/ awards/ his-her literary age etc.)
3. Introduction to Poem (i.e. in which circumstances this poem was written, what inspire poet to write this poetry etc)
4. Brief About Poet (what actually particulars stanza/ poem wants to convey, general brief story of poem)
5. Structure of poem that means either this poem is sonnet or which type of stanza pattern it follows, how much line this poetry have, rhyme scheme, stanza scheme i.e. quatrain, sestet,
6. Texture of Poem that means which type of literary device/figures of speech has been used, i.e. slimily/ personification / imagery / illusion etc. You can get all this details about poetry on Homework Help, Teacher Resources, Test Prep very easily compare to other site.
Now lets start reading
It would be easy to understand modern poetry - proto modern poetry rather than renaissance poetry.
So I suggest to start reading with W B Yeats (9th Block)
Adam’s Curse
No Second Troy
Easter 1916
Sailing to Byzantium
This all are short poem compare to other poems, and this are quite simple to understand, You may read this poem, with stanza wise analysis, on Homework Help, Teacher Resources, Test Prep , Study Guides & Essay Editing and Study Guides, Lesson Plans, Homework Help, Answers & More.
Once you complete Yeats, Jump to Block 6 William Black, finish all his wonderful short poetry.
thereafter jump to block 10 where you will meet Dylan Thomas, who died at age of 39 due to extensive drinking (of course alcohol), and his poetry on death. You have to finish all three poet of Block 10 Dylan Thomas, Philip Larkin and Sylvia Plath.
As per my analysis, Both style of paper compulsory consist question from Block 10.
Now you should go to Block Two read Sonnets of Spenser (Read only sonnet for now not Prothalamion and Epithalamion). There are three wonderful sonnet about his love life with second wife Elizabeth Boyle.
Once you complete this poets/poems, you are ready to read any poetry. Because, we should play easy to hard mode.
